If you are scheduled for a MORNING colonoscopy...
​

One Week Before Your Colonoscopy

​

The following instructions should be read and followed at least a week before your scheduled

colonoscopy.

​

1. Stop taking aspirin (and related products such as Aleve, Tylenol and others) 5 days before the

procedure unless otherwise specified by your physician.

​

2. Stop taking any anti-platelet medication (including fish oil) 5 days before the procedure unless

otherwise specified by your physician. 

​

Note: You may be able to take your other medications as usual with the following exceptions.

​

3. Consult your physician if you are:

• Taking Coumadin (Warfarin, Jantoven), Pradaxa, Plavix, Eliquis, Xarelto, Brillinta, Effient, or

other blood thinner or platelet inhibitor.

​

4. Consult your physician if you are:

Diabetic

Taking arthritis medication

Or if you are on any NEW medications

​

5. Schedule a friend or family member to drive you home after your procedure.

​

Preparing for Your Colonoscopy

​

The following instructions will guide you through what you need to do before your colonoscopy.

​

1. Purchase the following over the counter medications:

Dulcolax (bisacodyl tablets)

Miralax

Note: generic equivalents are a suitable option.

​

The Day BEFORE Your Procedure:

​

Do not eat any solid food whatsoever.

Drink ONLY CLEAR LIQUIDS throughout the day and up until 3 hours before your procedure the next day.

​

Nothing at all by mouth during the three hours preceding your procedure.

​

A CLEAR LIQUID DIET includes the following:

Broth

Hard candy

Fruit juice (NO PULP—If you can’t see through it, don’t drink it) You can drink white grape juice, pear

juice, and apple juice. WATER (Stay well-hydrated) Kool-Aid (NO red dye) Gatorade or Powerade (NO

purple or red) Tea or coffee (NO cream)

Soda: 7-UP, Sprite, Pepsi/Coke, Ginger Ale, Orange Soda (NO red dye) Jell-0

(NO red dye)

Around 1 PM the day before your procedure:

​

Take 4 Dulcolax (bisacodyl) tablets with a large drink of clear liquid.

​

Around 2 PM:

Mix 64 oz. of your favorite sport drink (e.g. Gatorade, Powerade., with 8.3 ounces (238 grams) of

MiraLAX. Shake until completely dissolved.

Place the solution in the refrigerator. Around 6 PM:

Begin drinking the MiraLAX solution. Small sips with water or other clear liquid in between.

Take your time. Slow sips with plenty of time between sips.

Drinking it quickly will make you feel sick. Drink it slow.

Drink the first HALF of it over at least the span of two to three hours.

Note:

You also need to drink additional water, Propel, Gatorade, or other similar clear fluid.

Avoid red dyes.

​

The MORNING OF Your Procedure:

​

At least 5 to 6 hours BEFORE your procedure:

​

1. Begin drinking the second HALF of the MiraLAX solution.

You MUST finish drinking the rest of the solution at least 3 hours BEFORE your procedure.

For example:

If your procedure is scheduled for 7:30 AM, start drinking the second half of the prep at 3:30 AM. Finish

drinking the solution by 4:30.

We cannot administer IV sedation if you consume anything within THREE HOURS of the procedure.

2. Don't drink anything during the three hours before your procedure.

​

3. Arrive ONE HOUR BEFORE your scheduled procedure.

​

If you are scheduled for an AFTERNOON colonoscopy...
​

One Week Before Your Colonoscopy

​

The following instructions should be read and followed at least a week before your scheduled

colonoscopy.

​

procedure unless otherwise specified by your physician.

​

2. Stop taking any anti-platelet medication (including fish oil) 5 days before the procedure unless

otherwise specified by your physician.

Around 6 AM the morning of your procedure:

Begin drinking the MiraLAX solution. Drink small sips slowly, spaced over the span of two to three hours. In

between sips, drink additional water, Propel, Gatorade, or other similar drink. 

Avoid red dyes.

You MUST finish drinking the Miralax solution and other clear liquids at least 3 hours BEFORE your

procedure.

​

For example:

If your procedure is scheduled for 12 PM, finish drinking the solution by 9 AM at the latest.

​

We cannot administer IV sedation if you consume anything within THREE HOURS of the procedure.

​

2. Don't drink anything during the three hours before your procedure.

​

3. Arrive ONE HOUR BEFORE your scheduled procedure.

​
